New Team Jerseys!

November, 2009 New Team Jerseys have arrived.

The Sunday Morning Rugby Team is sporting new rugby uniforms. With the help of our sponsors Schlafly Beer, Mogul Realty, Guardian Insurance Group, Panache Plus and a few team fund raisers worked by team players and club members, we were able to purchase a new set of rugby jerseys. We also expanded the uniform to include rugby shorts with our logo imbroidered on them, warmup t-shirt, and socks. Starting this year with the payment of team dues each player will receive rugby shorts with logo, warmup t-shirt, and socks. Matching Coaching jerseys with reverse colors were also purchased for match days so the coaching staff will be easily recognizable. A big thank you to our Sponsors and all those who participated to make this purchase possible. More photos found here...   PHOTO: New Official SMRC jerseys and match day uniforms.

Good Turn Out for Old Boys Match

Sunday - October 18, 2009 Old Boys Match - SMRC Old Boys vs Macoupin County Rugby Club Mercenaries (Retired)

The Old Boys of Black and Grey (Macoupin County Mercenaries Rugby Football Club) turned out a respectable side with a little help from a few Rowdies Old Boys to take on the SMRC Old Boys. An old style rugby match was played with hard hitting, hard running, and a little bit of smack talk thrown in just for fun. Macoupin played their hard tackling style we all remembered while Sunday Morning gave as good as they got as the match was toe to toe for the first half. Both sides played a hard fought match with Sunday Morning ending up on top to win the match with a broken play try scored towards the end of the second half. Player's ages ranged from 35 to 60 years old and a safe match was played with no injuries. Congratulations to Doug G. who celebrated is 25 consecutive year of playing rugby, having played 10 years with Macoupin Mercenaries and for the last 15 years playing for Sunday Morning Rugby Club. The afternoon was ended with everyone returning back to the Sunday Morning Rugby Clubhouse for food, refreshments, and stories of "what great rugby players we all use to be". Thank you to all the fans who came to cheer on the Old Boys match (we had a great crowd) and to everyone who participated and help organize this event and helped make it a success. Special thank you to Macoupin County Rugby Football Club and Rowdies Rugby Club for their participation. Photos from the day found here.   PHOTO: Players who participated in the Old Boys Match.

Old Boys Match Scheduled October 18, 2009

Sunday - October 18, 2009 Old Boys Match - SMRC Old Boys vs Macoupin County Rugby Club Mercenaries (Retired)

Break out the boots and shorts an old boys match will be held October 18, after the Sunday Morning Rugby vs Scott Rowdies cup match. The Cup match will be played at 1:00 pm at Marquette Park and the Old Boys match will follow. So come out and cheer the new SMRC team and then get geared up to play a match. The Old Boys from Macoupin County Rugby Club (Mercenaries) have accepted an invitation to play a match against SMRC Old Boys. At this time it looks like the Old Macoupin Boys will be able to side a team (including some original members) and they look forward to playing the match and then reminiscing about the old days. Scott Rowdies Old Boys have also been invited to help fill out the sides if needed. All Old Boys are asked to attend, even if you have to sit out the match, so we can get together with some old teammates and adversaries and to brag how good we use to be. Food and BEER will be served after the match at the Club House as always. It has been a few years since we have had an Old Boys Match so don’t miss this opportunity and let’s make this event a great success. We would like to try and get a head count of Old Boy players who will play and or attend so please shoot me an email letting me (Doug G.) know or contact Leroy M. or Joe K. dgonzo@sundaymorningrugby.com   PHOTO: Macoupin County Rugby Club Logo

SMRC Ruggers Back From Vegas

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…..Or goes on the internet. On Thursday June 18 th, four courageous Sunday Morning ruggers, 2 wives and 1 unsuspecting girlfriend departed for Sin City. With the excuse of a 7’s tournament and the intention of inebriation they took the city by storm. Rarely has so much money been lost on the quest for drunken glory.

As with all good intentions, we quickly dissolved into debauchery. The Hooter’s “casino” only wishes it had $3 blackjack. We took them on the tables and in the bar. The rest is still blackness, so bear with us…..

Friday found us on top of the world, or halfway up Mt. Charleston. Maybe it was the scenery, maybe it was the beer, but eventually a decision was made that would forever change the lives of Buddha and Becky. The unsuspecting girlfriend quickly found herself trying on rings from the parking lot vendors. After a pre-wedding feast at In and Out Burger and a quick stop by Boot City for proper attire (bolo ties and a fancy shirt) the ceremony at the Graceland Chapel was ready to commence. As of press time the nuptials continue to hold like the bond of a man and his Fatburger. Champagne was drank, congratulations were given and the entire wedding party was turned loose on the town.

For the honeymoon, finding no quarter at the MGM, the happy couple, the Bisters and a svelt Tim, tore off down the strip. While enjoying the action at the luxurious Craps table at Bill’s Gambling Hall, Sean and Tim were propositioned by funny talkers in funny jersyes. After some debating it was agreed that we would don the funny jerseys and partake in the hot, dry action that is the Midnight 7’s tourney. Upon arriving at the tourney, the intrepid warriors were informed that they would be playing for the Country King Browns. The King Browns are a select touring side from Northern Australia and the brave lads from SMRC became their first capped players from North America. After realizing they would be playing in the ACE’s division, the two purple forwards immediately had another beer and prepared for battle. All in all Tim and Sean represented the club well and helped the King Browns to a spirited win over Ft. Collins Flamingoes and a narrow loss to MTC Rugby from London, England. While the tournament may not have ended in a trophy presentation, try telling us, we got the pictures!!!

The remainder of the tour was spent drinking our cares away. The travelers, Tim Hamer, The “new” Morrisons (Jay and Becky), The Owens (DJ and Sara) and the Bisters (Sean and Brittany), returned a little poorer in the pocket but richer in memories. A special thanks goes out the Country King Browns, for the opportunity to represent the Stl on an intercontinental stage. Also thank you to all the wonderful cocktail waitresses that kept our wallets light and livers heavy. Las Vegas Midnight 7's Summer 2009

Attention all rugby players, retired players, old boys, and fans. For those of you who don't know, there is a 7's rugby tourney in Las Vegas every summer. This summer some of us from SMRC will be rekindling the tradition of drunken, sunburned, standing around missing tackles, we like to call 7's. If you are interested in going to the tournament it is on June 20, 2009. In order to get cheaper flights and to lengthen the partaking in alcoholic beverages, we are departing on June 18 and will return on June 22. We have booked rooms at the MGM Grand. We know what you're thinking, this must have cost a fortune, but for the low low cost of only $318/room total, you too can stay in the MGM. If you are interested in booking a room, here is the link to do so: MGM. We have not determined flights and we are still working on fielding a team but if you're interested in this room deal it may be reserved for only $56 a night and it ends in early March. Sean will discuss this more at the next membership meeting, or email him for more information. Photo: Players from Las Vegas 7's from 2003.
